The education (or non-education) of food and health in American society never ceases to amaze me. I am by no means the skinnest person in the world, nor do I obey and follow all of the knowledge I do have. However, I do see how most of America is so obese after this conversation I had with a 38ish year old woman. (who is kinda large....I'm not trying to be mean, just telling the truth). The Setting: 3:30 in the afternoon at work. The woman is on a diet she just started today. Woman: I think that I am going to run to the gas station to get something to snack on. Me: Ok Woman: I have not taken in ANY calories today so I am really weak Me: (Thinking that she is exagerating) Oh, what did you eat for lunch? Woman: I had vegetable soup. It is calorie free. Me: Um, thats impossible. Everything has calories in it. Woman: No, this soup is good for you so it doesn't have calories. Me: Whats it have in it? Woman: Oh, cabbage, tomatoes, celery, tomatoe juice, etc Me: Um, yeah let me show you So I proceeded to show her a calorie counter online and show her how many calories were in things like tomatoes, cabbage, etc. She seriously thought that only "bad" things had calories. I now understand that our society does not understand healthy eating because they are not educated. And when they are educated, it is usually on weird diets like the atkins and they do not understand a healthy, balanced diet. I'm not writing this to judge anyone, because I do not eat healthy most of the time at all, but I do want to point out the uneducation of America's society. Its not that people just don't care, its that they do not understand. |
